Copper Theft Continues to Grow

Metal prices are not declining, and neither is the theft high prices bring.  Recent reports show metal theft continues to rise steadily, as it has done since August of 2009.  Metal theft is a drain on the Insurance industry and a nuisance to business and home owners.  More importantly, it is becoming a threat to our national infrastructure.

When copper thieves stole the wiring from runway approach lights in Modesto, CA it led to a blacked out runway with flights unable to land.  Just last spring, in Lee’s Summit thieves stole copper wiring out of a Scout billboard preventing traffic and Amber Alert notifications for hundreds of drivers.

The copper cop, created by Kenton Brothers, is a proactive device that deters theft before it can occur.  We combine a high mega pixel IP video camera, strobe light, and talk down feature administered by an off-site monitoring company to see criminal activity before it occurs and take action to prevent it.

Installing the Copper Cop Saves on Insurance Deductibles

A large heavy construction company, Loch Sand Construction, with remote locations was suffering significant losses in down time and damaged equipment.  With no access to electricity, they needed a completely self-contained preventative security system.

Kenton Brothers designed a system containing a high resolution camera powered by a solar panel, video analytics to follow a perpetrator throughout the site, a real-time talk-down feature to prevent a theft from ever happening, and a high powered IR Illuminator to illuminate the remote location: all available to be viewed remotely from any internet or wireless connection.

With this intelligent video solution from Kenton Brothers, the remote video monitoring company is able to follow an individual through the construction site using a virtual tracking system. The IR Illuminator lights up the remote location, high volume loud speaker lets the individual know he/she is being watched, and if the individual chooses not to vacate the premises the police are dispatched.  This system is unique in that it is a preventative measure rather than a reactive measure.  The goal is to stop him before theft or vandalism can occur.

“With the Kenton Brother’s system we have the confidence that these people will not have anymore than a few seconds at the most.  We can have our assets protected in the most remote areas and not have to constantly worry about what is going to come up missing every morning.” Chris Jenkins, Safety Director/EEO Officer with Loch Sand Construction.

In addition to the added peace of mind, Loch’s insurance company has offered to waive the deductible on any future theft or damage after installing Kenton Brother’s system.

Local Church Installs AC Copper Cop

Problem: Damaged and vandalized AC units leaving both inoperable.

Stoney Point Church in Kansas City, Kansas recently made a very hard decision:  to spend over $20,000.00 out of a tight church budget to add air conditioning to the church gym.  The church could not use the gym during the hot summer months, as it was unbearably hot.

While the church waited for gas lines and a security fence to be installed; an unidentified individual ripped apart both AC units, removing the coil from one, and draining the Freon from the other.  With no Freon, the compressor burned out of the unit and it was completely destroyed.

Kenton Solution:

To install the AC Copper Cop and use security tools in a new way:  to prevent as opposed to react.

Kenton Brothers designed a remotely monitored system combining intelligent video with a ‘talk-down’ feature and strobe light: all available to be viewed remotely from any internet or wireless connection.

With intelligent video from VideoIQ, the alarm monitoring company is able to determine with a mere glance if there is a true threat, or if it is simply a roaming animal.  As soon as a perpetrator sets foot on church property, a strobe light begins flashing and the alarm company operator is heard over a loud speaker.  The perpetrator is warned that he/she is on private property and the police have been notified.  If the perpetrator does not leave, the police will be dispatched.

Root Cause:

Church AC units located 30 yards from a busy road.   Easy access to a turn out, extensive vegetation providing cover, and no visible line of sight from the church office.  Additionally, no after hours monitoring.

Did You Hear? Thieves Steal Two Security Cameras And Two Air Conditioning Units From Local KC Business.

Last week, thieves made off with two out of three security cameras and two air conditioning units from Tropical Palms Banquet Hall near I-435 and 87th Street in Kansas City. This business had already been hit on an earlier date, when valuable DJ equipment was stolen.

With the price of copper at a high average value, thieves have been targeting items like air conditioning units around Kansas City more than ever. Security cameras can help prevent theft or provide evidence and identification of the perpetrators.

Even when thieves take off with security cameras, the recorded evidence is still available when stored on a DVR, or to an on-or-off- site IP network. Unfortunately, based on the video footage we’ve seen of the theft, the poor image quality of the cameras at this particular business may be preventing police and business owners from identifying the thieves.

Even if you have existing cameras, it may be time to upgrade to more technologically advanced cameras that offer a better visual identification of individuals and vehicles. Not all video security systems are created equal. Just take a look at the difference between the ability to identify objects using newer megapixel cameras here. Even night time activity can be captured with a clearer picture using cameras like this.

A basic system from a big box retailer is not going to provide the same image quality, resolution, or protection of a system specifically designed for you and your facility by security professionals. The level of security and identification you prefer should always dictate the type of system you install for your property. The words “price” and “value” are not interchangeable….you always get what you pay for.

Fortunately, today’s technology has made more robust security systems more affordable, and Kenton Brothers offers traditional DVR-based systems and IP-based video systems, as well as an off-site IP-based video security solution through WatchMyStuff by our sister company,  SecureMyStuffOnline.  We can help you build a video security system that fits your budget and provides you with the image quality to identify thieves and trespassers.  To learn more, or to schedule a personal demo of the solutions we provide, visit us at www.kentonbrothers.com and www.securemystuffonline.com.
