Video Analytics
Evolution of Video Systems
Video Surveillance systems have evolved through 6 distinct generations over the past 30 years. The first four generations simply defined changes in how video is was recorded, its image quality, and how it was stored.
Limited Benefits of Early Generation Systems
The benefit of early generation systems was as an “extender of visual observation.” In essence, a security guard could only be in one place at one time, however if a guard is watching multiple cameras then she can essentially be in more places at the same time. The return on investment was defined by the ratio of views to live guard ratio as well as any evidentiary value.
Changing the Paradigm Through Analytics
The last two generations change the paradigm of video surveillance from passively collecting evidence to being capable of altering staff based upon a set of rules and possibly preventing the event from ever happening.
In addition, systems that employ Video Analytics can use down time to collect data that is useful to business decision makers (people and vehicle counts, customer wait times, vehicle speeds, etc.).
