AXIS Q6000 is a Large Area IP Surveillance Camera with Eyes in the Back of its Head.

AXISQ6000Network video surveillance specialist Axis Communications has launched its AXIS Q6000-E, an outdoor-ready 360° network camera, designed for unique integration with the AXIS Q60-E Series of PTZ dome network surveillance cameras. With a single click, operators can used the model Q6000-E to optically zoom in on details of interest with high precision, while at the same time maintaining an overview of large areas of up to 215,000 sq. ft., or about the size of four football fields. This makes AXIS Q6000-E ideal for city surveillance applications, such as monitoring of public squares and parking lots, as well as food courts in shopping malls and other open areas, said Axis in a press release.

The AXIS Q6000-E features four 2 megapixel camera heads, each providing individually configurable 720p HDTV video streams in H.264 compression to greatly optimize bandwidth and storage without compromising image quality. Motion JPEG is also supported for increased flexibility. Any AXIS Q60- E camera is quickly and easily mounted inside the AXIS Q6000-E, allowing pre-existing AXIS Q60-E installations to be upgraded to monitor wide areas, while simultaneously capturing every detail of interest with just one click. The company adds that there’s no need for any mounting brackets or extra equipment as AXIS Q6000-E uses the same brackets and network cable as the AXIS Q60-E, minimizing time and cost of installation. Furthermore, AXIS Q6000-E is supplied with Power over Ethernet Plus (PoE+) through AXIS Q60-E, eliminating the need for power cables.

The company says the product will open up new opportunities to solve a common problem, for example in the city surveillance field where there is a need for both a PTZ camera to provide detail, and for a full overview camera to cover the entire area. A single click on any object in AXIS Q6000-E, using the one-click PTZ control feature, will trigger the AXIS Q60-E allowing operators to optically zoom in on the specific object of interest. The use of two screens gives a full 360° overview from AXIS Q6000-E, and a zoomed-in view from AXIS Q60-E, providing operators with a high level of detail while simultaneously being able to maintain an overview of the entire monitored area.

The AXIS Q6000-E’s video management software is channeled through the Axis Application Development Partner Program. The camera includes support for AXIS Camera Companion, AXIS Camera Application Platform, ONVIF specification for interoperability of network video products and AXIS Video Hosting System (AVHS) with One-Click Camera Connection. The Q6000-E is planned to be available in Q4 2014 through Axis’ standard distribution channels, and was displayed at the recent ASIS International trade sow (Sept. 29 – Oct. 1).

“Surveillance of large areas is challenging and often inefficient,” notes Fredrik Nilsson, general manager, Axis Communications. “The AXIS Q6000-E takes the best of both worlds delivering wide area surveillance and detailed optical zoom on areas of interest. The seamless integration with AXIS Q60-E Series provides a smart, innovative and space-efficient solution offering new and unique video surveillance possibilities for improved situational awareness in in city surveillance, critical infrastructure and retail applications.”
